Microsoft now says 8GB of RAM is a great fit for everyday Windows 11 use

With RAM prices pushing 16GB laptops out of reach, Microsoft now wants you to feel good about buying one with 8GB. “For many people, 8 GB is a great fit for the things they do every day,” Windows boss Pavan Davuluri wrote on November 3 in a blog that ends by recommending 8GB Windows 11 laptops from $429. Coming from the company that made 16GB the Copilot+ PC minimum and called 32GB the “no worries” upgrade for gamers, it’s quite a shift, and truth be told, I love it.

Also, Microsoft has numbers now. On 8GB PCs, Windows 11 is now up to 20% more responsive, and one heavy multitasking test finished up to 40% faster. Interestingly, before Microsoft (or anyone) shared any of their data, we had already tested Windows 11 26H2 on my dad’s 8GB laptop, and RAM usage after a restart dropped from 5GB to 3.3GB.

Microsoft says you can get faster performance from $429 Windows 11 laptops with 8GB RAM

The $429 deal in Microsoft’s blog recommends the Lenovo V15 G6 ARP at Walmart. It has a six-core AMD Ryzen 5 150, 8GB of DDR5 RAM, a 256GB SSD, and a 15.6-inch Full HD IPS display. Walmart’s listing also mentions two memory slots, which my laptop with soldered RAM sorely lacks.

Microsoft’s Surface Laptop 13-inch is a different story. When it launched in May 2025, it cost $899 with 16GB of RAM. Today, the base model with the identical Snapdragon X Plus costs $949.99 with 8GB, while 16GB will set you back $1,149.99. Thank the ever-so-powerful AI companies for that!

Funnily enough, Microsoft also promoted the $699 Dell XPS 13 with 8GB in June to hit back at Apple’s MacBook Neo, which also starts with 8GB. Either way, a $429 Lenovo makes a far better case for 8GB than a Surface that costs more than twice as much.

Microsoft spent years telling Windows users to buy more RAM

Windows 11’s official minimum is still 4GB, but Microsoft gladly steered us the other way. Copilot+ PCs launched in 2024 with 16GB as a hard requirement, and we found a recent Lenovo spec sheet labels anything below 16GB “Non-Copilot”.

Gamers got the hardest push. Microsoft’s gaming guide said “16GB RAM is the baseline; 32GB is the ‘no worries’ upgrade,” adding that “Moving to 32GB RAM helps if you run Discord, browsers, or streaming tools alongside your games.” We spotted it on May 1, and Microsoft deleted it a few days later after the outrage. In August, another guide that called 32GB “ideal for serious players” vanished as well.

The U-turn started in May, when Microsoft announced an 8GB Surface Laptop for Business at $1,299.99. By June, the Surface store called 8GB “great for everyday use like browsing, streaming, schoolwork, and productivity apps,” even as Microsoft’s AI store assistant called 16GB the “safer choice.”

Now the “great fit” line comes from the head of Windows, in a Windows blog, with seemingly hard engineering work behind it, which is always admirable. Tali Roth, Head of Product for Windows Shell, said: “The team has been laser focused here, should be something you notice for all PCs but especially 8 GB ones.”

Is 8GB of RAM enough for Windows 11 now?

For everyday work, Microsoft says yes, but with a caveat. “The workload still matters, and a PC with 16 GB or 32 GB can take on more,” Davuluri wrote, adding that 3D modeling, advanced video editing, and large-scale data processing benefit from 16GB or more. The $949.99 Surface page also says you need 16GB for “access to Copilot+ PC experiences.”

The “great fit” claim holds more weight because the work started months ago. On Microsoft’s April earnings call, Satya Nadella mentioned “performance improvements for lower-memory devices,” and in July, Davuluri made “memory optimization for 8GB and above“ an official priority. On Microsoft’s Inside Windows podcast, he said memory is top of mind “especially as we look at the rising cost of memory for computers across the board.”

Interestingly, IDC’s Jitesh Ubrani predicted in the beginning of June that the PC industry would answer the MacBook Neo with “new silicon, a more efficient OS from Microsoft, and aggressive promotional pricing.” Three months later, Windows can keep up to 2GB more of your active data in RAM, and Microsoft has cut committed-memory growth by up to 900MB in its tests. Neat prediction, I would say!

Microsoft’s own apps need a RAM diet too

Windows is getting leaner, but Microsoft’s own apps haven’t caught up. Windows 11’s Weather app uses over 1.2GB of RAM while idle because it’s a WebView2 web app, while macOS Weather uses 246.7MB. This might be the easiest app to be re-made into WinUI. C’mon Microsoft, you can do this.

Still, with PC shipments down about 20% last quarter as AI data centers eat the world’s RAM, making Windows 11 run better on cheaper hardware beats telling everyone to buy more memory. Would you buy an 8GB Windows laptop this holiday?
