Microsoft had launched its Edge Browser for both iOS and Android some time ago with the Edge Browser for iOS already available as an app in the App Store but limited to US region. The Edge browser for iOS has garnered many users since its launch on iPhone and Microsoft is also working on bringing the Edge Browser to iPad users very soon.

Microsoft’s Edge Browser has been developed using Apple’s WebKit engine on iOS. The Edge Browser for iOS supports Tab View with users being able to view articles in different tabs. The browser on iPhone also supports voice search and QR scanner.

The Browser was first launched in Preview for the iOS users with many features and after testing them with the Beta users, the company pushed out the official Edge Browser to all iOS users in the App Store.

Microsoft Edge browser also brings PC syncing feature which lets users to browse the webpage from mobile and continue to use the same webpage on their PCs. To let iOS users use the Edge Browser on their Window’s PCs, they would need to be on the latest version of Windows 10, Fall Creators Update to enjoy the benefits of PC syncing.

Today, the Redmond Giant is rolling out a new update to Microsoft Edge for iOS users bumping it to new version 41.10. The update comes with the much awaited 3D Touch feature for supported iPhone devices. This is the same update which was rolled out to the Preview version of the Edge browser for iOS preview users.

Along with the new 3D Touch option, Microsoft has also introduced the option to share links to Edge from other apps via the share option. You will also be able to open new tab in the background by long pressing on a link.

The Redmond Giant has also added option for users to choose the content region for news feed on the New Tab page. The Edge browser now also supports integration with password managers, Last Pass and 1 Password which has been added by the company in its previous update letting users to fill details like username and passwords when browsing the web.

The latest update to the Microsoft Edge browser is currently live and you can get it by clicking the below App Store link.

AdDuplex claims that the adoption of the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update is going well, apparently, because the Fall Creators Update rollout is complete. Devices running any previous version of Windows 10 operating system are now allowed to upgrade to the latest release.

According to new data provided by AdDuplex, 85 percent of all Windows 10 devices already running the latest version. AdDuplex says adoption of the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update is going well and “has reached now 85% of PCs.”

Windows 10 version 1703 (Creators Update) is still in the second position with a share of 8.1 percent, while on the other hand, Windows 10 version 1607 (Anniversary Update) is third with 5.1 points, it has become the third most widely used version.

Two months ago FCU jumped up by 30%, last month by about 20% and now it added another 10%. The growth is obviously slowing down as the next update is imminent,” said AdDuplex, the largest cross-promotion network for Microsoft Store apps and games.

AdDuplex hasn’t detailed the market share of Windows 10 Mobile versions and Lumia devices. The company has however published a data showing the market share of Surface devices running the operating system, apparently the newer the device, the bigger the chances to run the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update. The only exception is the Surface Pro 4 which is in the first position with 34.6 percent share, while the 2017 Surface Pro is now the third most popular Surface worldwide with a 13.3% market share, and Surface Laptop is at just 1.9 percent.

“The new Surface Pro continues to grow and is now third, while Surface Laptop is still stuck at 2% and doesn’t seem to be going anywhere,” AdDuplex said.

Microsoft is now finalizing the release of another Windows 10 update, codenamed Redstone 4 (Spring Creators Update). The RTM version of this operating system will be ready in March, and the update will be released to the general public in April.

Today, Qualcomm announced a new list of the carriers who will join Verizon and Sprint to support Windows 10 on ARM PCs in the country. The chipmaker has also announced a list of retailers who will sell the Always Connected Windows 10 PCs at their online stores. The stores including Amazon will start shipping the devices in select countries in the first half of 2018.

Qualcomm and Microsoft today announced that leading retailers from across the world will be selling the Always Connected Windows 10 PCs with the eSIM technology supported by the mobile operators. In the coming months, Qualcomm and Microsoft plan to sell these devices at the following stores:

  • U.S.A – Amazon, Microsoft Stores
  • U.K. – Asus Stores, BT Shop, John Lewis, Microsoft Stores, PC World
  • China – JD.com
  • Australia – Microsoft Stores
  • France – Boulanger, Fnac
  • Italy – Unieuro

“Microsoft and Qualcomm Technologies have worked closely with leading PC manufacturers to push the boundaries of what a Windows PC can do and how it performs, while still offering the features and innovative experiences that Windows 10 users expect,” said Matt Barlow, Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President of Windows and Devices.

Microsoft’s partnership with leading retailers will help the software giant around the world while selling the Always Connected PC, this could also help the Windows 10 on ARM project to succeed this year. Windows 10 on ARM has many limitations, but it wouldn’t be such a big deal for most of the consumers, one of such limitations is lack of support for x86 drivers and legacy 64-bit apps.

Last year a report claimed that these Always Connected PCs powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 processor won’t support features available on mobile devices, as Qualcomm has optimized the chipset for the PCs. One of the features missing from Always Connected PCs is Wireless Charging, though this decision makes sense as Wireless Charging would be only useful for the devices with proper hardware, and this technology is not ready for PCs.

Unfortunately, NFC support is also missing, and it’s not included in the official documentation. Despite all these limitations, Always Connected PCs will deliver impressive performance, and chipset has been optimized for long battery life, it can achieve one week of battery life per charge.

Microsoft and Qualcomm last year announced Always Connected Windows 10 PCs, the project is their take on Windows for Mobile and cellular PC, it also aligns with Redmond’s target for delivering Windows as a Service. Microsoft last year announced the name of multiple mobile operators who will provide connectivity to these devices and support them on their network. With multiple OEMs gearing up to reveal their new Always Connected Devices, Qualcomm has today announced a new list of the mobile operators.

Microsoft keeps looking at ways to expand the Windows 10 on ARM project, and part of these plans seems to be partnering with the major mobile operators. Today, Qualcomm in a blog post has announced a new list of mobile operators who will support the Always-Connected Windows 10 PCs powered by Snapdragon processor from Microsoft partners. The major mobile operators including AT&T and T-Mobile will support these devices and make sure that the Always Connected PCs are always connected to the internet.

List of supported mobile operators announced last year

  • China – China Telecom
  • Italy – TIM
  • U.K. – EE
  • U.S. – Sprint, Verizon

List of new operators who will support this project

  • U.S.A – T-Mobile and AT&T
  • China – CMCC (China Mobile Communications Corporation)
  • Germany – Deutsche Telekom
  • Australia – Telstra
  • Spain – Telefónica
  • Switzerland – Swisscom
  • France – Transatel
  • Ireland – Cubic

“The Always Connected PC combines the connectivity and the simplicity of the smartphone with the power and creative capability of the Windows 10 PC, transforming how we work and play,” said Microsoft’s Windows and Devices, Corporate Vice President.

All of these mobile operators would support these devices and provide LTE connectivity to the new class of PCs via eSIM capabilities.

Windows 10 on ARM project is Microsoft’s attempt at rebooting its Windows RT efforts that were started in 2012, but the project failed due to a number of limitations such as lack of Win32 software. While Microsoft’s first attempt Windows RT was a flop pretty much because of the lack of apps, Windows 10 on ARM has no such problems or limitations and it’s likely to be a hit.

The WannaCry ransomware cyber attack which happened in May of 2017 targeted millions of PCs all over the world. The ransomware encrypted the data and demanded ransom payments in Bitcoin currency. Around 200,000 computers across 150 countries were affected. One of the largest agencies that were harshly affected by this ransomware was the National Health Service hospitals in the UK. On an estimate, around 70,000 devices were affected including computers, MRI scanners, theatre equipment and blood storage refrigerators.

The PCs were running on Windows XP and Windows 7. Microsoft released security patches to protect the PCs. The PCs running Windows 10 were completely immune to the ransomware attack. Since the NHS hospitals were badly struck by the attack one would naturally expect the hospitals to upgrade to the most secure version of Windows available- Windows 10.

But according to a research done by Digital Health Intelligence, it was found that only one percent of NHS trusts have upgraded to Windows 10. More than three-quarters of the acute trust and mental trust still rely on Windows 7.

Microsoft has already announced that support for Windows 7 will end on 2020. A spokesperson from NHS Digital said to Digital Health News:

NHS Digital is currently working with Microsoft and system partners on how best to provide a framework to move to Windows 10. Any subsequent agreement will be designed to expedite roll out and support organizations. The migration itself is, however, a local activity, and NHS organizations are all aware that support for the software ends in January 2020.

To get timely security patches and updates every agency must upgrade to Windows 10 but it is easier said than done. Upgrading the systems to Windows 10 is not done simply by installing Windows 10. There are a lot of difficulties concerned when upgrading completely to Windows 10. These problems were recently faced by the US Air Force. They had to replace a lot of computers to meet the minimum requirements to support Windows 10.

Even though it is an expensive thing to do, all agencies and institutions depending on Microsoft should upgrade their systems to Windows 10. This will ensure the security of their data from any more cyber attacks. We hope that NHS will soon find ways to upgrade their systems to Windows 10.

Microsoft yesterday pushed out a new Firmware update for its Surface Pro 3 device which is available for download. The latest Firmware Update comes with fixes for the recent Meltdown and Spectre Vulnerabilities which affected lot of devices.

The latest Firmware version v3.11.2350.0 is available for download which is pushed out to resolve the security vulnerabilities mainly for the Meltdown and Spectre. Meltdown and Spectre have been recently discovered as two critical security vulnerabilities especially in Intel chipsets.

The Meltdown and Spectre security flaw is very critical since it helps the attackers to be able to steal sensitive data from the PCs and Smartphones affected by the vulnerability. The security flaw has been mainly detected in the processors from Intel along with AMD and ARM chipsets.

Meltdown has been reported as a security flaw in the hardware design of the chipsets with Intel processors which has been reported to having not only affected Desktops, Smartphones but also some of the noted Cloud services.

Spectre is reported to be a security flaw which effects select smartphones allowing attackers to access sensitive data. Microsoft has made sure to push out fixes for the Meltdown and Spectre Vulnerabilities for all its devices which includes Desktops, Laptops and Smartphones.

Along with Microsoft, Apple and Google has also made sure to push out fixes for its devices for the Vulnerabilities discovered to secure the data of their users. The companies have also requested users to make sure that they are not affected by the Meltdown and Spectre Vulnerabilities they would need to update their device regularly.

Microsoft pushed out updates for its Windows Operating system to make sure the users of Windows 10, 8.1 and Windows 7 stay up to date by updating their devices with the Cumulative Update released last week.

A couple of days after publicly disclosing the Microsoft Edge vulnerability, Google has now disclosed yet another new vulnerability in Windows 10, though the company say that it’s just a coincidence that the two flaws have been publicly disclosed in a short period of time. Google’s Project Zero team has publicly exposed a security flaw in Windows 10 Fall Creators Update (version 1709).

Google’s Project Zero program, security researcher, James Forshaw claims that the vulnerability can be exploited because of the way Windows 10 handles calls to Advanced Local Procedure Call (ALPC). This basically allows the standard user to obtain administrator privileges on Windows 10, which could be misused.

There are actually two bugs in this feature, named 1427 and 1428. Both of them were reported to Microsoft in November, but only 1427 has been addressed with Windows 10 cumulative updates released earlier this month, apparently because Microsoft found it to be more critical.

While Microsoft hasn’t patched the 1428 vulnerability, it should not be an issue as the software giant says it’s not a critical vulnerability. Microsoft has labelled this flaw as important but not critical, and the researcher explains that 1428 could not be exploited remotely as it requires additional steps.

“In order to execute the exploit you’d have to already be running code on the system at a normal user privilege level. It cannot be attacked remotely (without attacking a totally separate unfixed issue to get remote code execution), and also cannot be used from a sandbox such as those used by Edge and Chrome. The marking of this issue as High severity reflects the ease of exploitation for the type of issue, it’s easy to exploit, but it doesn’t take into account the prerequisites to exploiting the issue in the first place,” the researcher says.

You can expect the fix for the unpatched vulnerability next month, but as Google has publicly disclosed it, the fix might be arriving sooner than estimated.

WhatsApp which is working for some new features especially designed for the Group admins might well bring the option for admins to allow only a select number of people in the particular group to change the description. This feature is still under internal testing and we should be getting it sooner than later.

WhatsApp couple of days ago had released an update for its Beta app for Windows Phone which brought couple of hidden features, Stickers and Live Location. The team is currently testing the features internally and they should be enabled for all Beta users very soon.

The Group Description feature is currently available for beta testing and is live for Windows Phone users in the Microsoft Store and you can download it by clicking the below Microsoft Store link. Do let us know your thoughts on the new Group Description feature, in the comments below.

Microsoft’s Windows Insider Program (WIP) has seen immense success since its inception way back in 2014. It has become a large community with more than 10 million people all over the world. Microsoft has acknowledged these people by considering their feedback and releasing preview builds with improvements and bug fixes on a weekly basis.

Now, Microsoft is planning to bring more improvements to this program. Dona Sarkar who is the head of the Windows Insider Program at Microsoft told that Microsoft is planning to bring multiple changes for the betterment of the Insider program. Microsoft is also calling it “WIP 2020” which suggests that these changes will be happening in the next couple of years.

The Insider Chief stated that,

“We’re thinking about how we would build the Insider Program that would make us want to join it if we weren’t fans or working at Microsoft”

This clearly suggests that some exciting new changes are coming which would tempt more people into joining the Insider Program.

Jeremiah Marble, Windows Insider Program Architect explained that the changes coming to the Insider Program will be more of an evolution of the existing program rather than a complete changeover of the entire program. He also added that,

“But it’s also a collection of things we’ve wanted to achieve but haven’t yet done, It includes things we know we have to do, along with suggestions and top requests from Insiders.”

Microsoft has recently announced “Cohorts” feedback program where a select group of Windows Insiders who share a common idea and area of expertise can provide feedback to Microsoft. These feedbacks will be of higher priority than the normal feedback Microsoft gets from Insiders. This new program is in addition to the existing programs of Fast Ring, Slow Ring and Skip Ahead.

This is great news for Microsoft fans since it suggests that Microsoft wants to add more features to Windows 10 based on what the users want. We hope to see more news about the Insider Program at the annual Build Developer Conference in May.
