A couple of FCC filings have been spotted by us that approve four variants of “portable computing device”, thought to be the Surface Laptop 4. Microsoft has now filed for four FCC certifications – C3K1979, C3K1958, C3K1952 and C3K1950 – but most test reports are currently not available due to temporary confidentiality requested by the company.
The filing matches previous rumours that claimed the Surface Laptop 4 support pages are already live on Microsoft’s website. According to the filings, it looks like the next-gen Surface device will be offered with both Intel and AMD options, and it will support Intel’s WiFi 6 (802.11ax, 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz ranges).
Microsoft had submitted the alleged Surface Laptop 4 to FCC in March and listings were published earlier today (April 7). According to the SAR value in the FCC certification, the weight of the device is 1.3KG, which again confirms that it could be part of the Surface Laptop lineup.
For comparison, Surface Laptop 3 (13-inch) weighs 1.265KG, while Surface Go 2 weighs only 550g and Surface Book 2 (13-inch) weighs 1.530KG.
It’s also worth noting that at least two variants of Surface Laptop 4 with the same model numbers (C3K1952 and C3K1958) have already passed through Bluetooth and Korean certifications, as shown in the screenshot below.
Surface Laptop 4 rumoured specs
According to reports, Surface Laptop 4 could arrive as early as the next week and it will be part of the spring product launch, which is also expected to feature Microsoft Teams-certified Surface Headphones 2 and other accessories.
As mentioned at the outset, Surface Laptop 4 will be offered with Intel and AMD processors, with the AMD variant relying on the last-gen Ryzen 4000 series. For the Intel variant, Microsoft is considering 11th-generation ‘Tiger Lake’ processors with Xe graphics and at least 16GB of RAM.
In addition to upgraded hardware, sources have confirmed AMD and Intel CPUs will be included in both the 13.5- and 15-inch sizes. Both variants will feature the same design and you should not expect to see Thunderbolt 4.
