Microsoft’s Windows 10 operating system is moving closer to overtaking Windows 7, although the adoption rate of Windows 10 has slowed down over time. Microsoft’s Terry Myerson in his farewell post said that Windows 10 is running on around 700 million devices, this includes PCs, Xbox and even HoloLens.
Microsoft itself says adoption of its latest operating system is improving, although this happens at a rather slow pace. Right now, there are close to 700 million active devices running Windows 10, according to former Microsoft employee, Terry Myerson, the company’s Executive Vice President of the Windows and Devices Group.
The 700 million active users range from laptops, tablets, Xbox One, Windows Mixed Reality headsets, HoloLens and more. Myerson says that the Windows 10 has seen an uptick of 84% in the commercial usage.
“Today, we are now approaching 700 million active Windows 10 users, commercial usage is growing 84% year over year, Xbox One is running a Windows 10 core, Surface is leading PC innovation, HoloLens is bringing breakthroughs to computer vision, our universal Microsoft store enables Xbox GamePass, Azure reserved instances, and Office distribution, and the OEM ecosystem is revitalized with profitable growth,” Myerson said. “Last year, we finished the year with over $8B in operating income from our segment”.
According to StatCounter, Windows 10 is more popular than Windows 7, while on the other hand, NetMarketShare claims that the latest operating system is yet to overtake Windows 7. Microsoft Store data still says that there are more than 600 million active devices using Windows 10.
Windows 10 could experience a substantial growth in the coming years following the launch Microsoft’s foldable Andromeda, the Windows Core OS and new innovative projects which are projected to be announced next year.
Microsoft’s Terry Myerson yesterday announced that he is leaving the company to pursue new opportunities outside the Redmond. Myerson was one of the most important men at Microsoft, he led the important projects like Windows Phone, and in 2013, he was promoted to Executive Vice President position to led the Windows and Devices Group.
Myerson’s departure sounds a bit controversial and triggers a massive reorganization of Microsoft. In his farewell post, Myerson explained his journey at Microsoft and how he met Satya Nadella. He had several roles at the Redmond giant after his company Interse Corporation was purchased by Microsoft in the late 90s.
Microsoft is currently testing Windows 10 Spring Creators Update and as well as the Redstone 5. The Spring Creators Update is projected to launch in April, while the Redstone 5 will be released to the public in the fall.
