It’s been just two days since a report revealed that NYPD is giving up on Windows Phones for iPhone. New York Police Department has been criticised to use Windows Phone over Android and iPhone. Microsoft is no longer supporting the Lumias, NYPD has got, hence the department needs to replace them.

The story is now viral and this forced NYPD to release a statement on the controversy. NYPD Deputy Commissioner Jessica Tish defended Windows Phone and noted that Microsoft’s mobile platform was the best option available at that time.

Jessica Tish revealed that NYPD got those 36,000 Windows Phone for free. They didn’t pay a single cent to Microsoft for acquiring the 36,000 Lumia 830s and 640 XLs. “The contract entered provided for the smartphones at no cost. It also allowed for the NYPD to replace the smartphones with devices of our choosing two years later, also at no cost,” NYPD Deputy Commissioner Jessica Tish said.

Apparently, Windows Phone 8.1 was a good operating system and as NYPD got those Lumias at no charge, it makes sense for Jessica Tish to defend Microsoft’s mobile platform. It goes without saying that NYPD’s smartphone initiative would soon become more expensive as Apple is not going to give away the iPhones for free after all. Do you think NYPD’s decision to go with Microsoft’s Windows platform was a smart move?
