Windows 11’s latest Experimental builds have strings that show Microsoft is developing an in-built Auto Dark Mode feature, meaning users could eventually schedule Windows to switch between light and dark modes without installing PowerToys or another utility.
This was my second biggest gripe with Windows 11 dark mode (the first being legacy dialogs having no dark mode). To me, Windows 11 sometimes looks better in light mode, but I also don’t want a bright white interface at 11 PM. So, the ability to auto-schedule dark mode is a welcome addition, and one that was long overdue.
The discovered strings mention “Schedule auto mode,” a setting that lets the mode only change when the PC is idle, automatic scheduling based on location, and fixed start and end hours when location services are off.
It isn’t a publicly available Windows 11 feature yet. The evidence comes from text strings found inside Experimental builds, along with a file named Windows.Shell.AutoDarkMode.dll in System32.
Windows 11’s hidden Auto Dark Mode can follow sunset or a fixed schedule
Windows enthusiast phantomofearth spotted this first, posting that recent Experimental 26xxx builds “include various strings for it,” letting a user set sunset to sunrise or fixed hours and have the mode only change when the PC is idle.
A string in Windows is just text stored inside a program or system component, the words that eventually show up on a Settings page once a feature ships. The following are the strings present in recent Experimental 26xxx Insider builds:
- “Schedule auto mode”
- “Mode only changes when PC is idle”
- “This prevents the mode from changing while you’re working or in meetings”
- “Turn on location services to automatically schedule dark mode. When location services are turned off, dark mode is active from [START] to [END].”
The Windows.Shell.AutoDarkMode.dll file, which is a dedicated DLL, confirms the feature. But its presence in System32 doesn’t prove the feature is finished testing.
Phantomofearth also confirmed that the feature IDs to enable auto dark mode are not yet available in Insider builds.
“Schedule auto mode” suggests Windows will eventually expose an automatic light and dark schedule instead of a manual switch every time.
Sunset to sunrise would use location services to calculate the schedule, similar to how Night light already lets you schedule brightness changes from sunset to sunrise or custom hours. With location services off, dark mode can instead stay active between a set start and end time, so 7 PM to 7 AM would still work without giving Windows your location.
The most interesting string is “Mode only changes when PC is idle,” which exists to prevent the theme from changing while you’re working or in a meeting. Of course, this doesn’t mean that Windows is tracking your meetings. More likely, a scheduled transition arriving while you’re active on the PC gets held until the machine goes idle, which prevents the screen from suddenly flipping from white to black mid-presentation.
Windows 11’s dark mode won’t need third-party apps
Windows 11 already supports Light, Dark, and Custom modes under Settings > Personalization > Colors, with Custom letting you set Windows and apps independently. The obvious missing feature was that it never had a built-in way to schedule it by time.
Windows 10 introduced the modern dark theme with the 2016 Anniversary Update, pitched as useful for switching supported apps to a darker look at night. Automatic scheduling was not available.
I have used f.lux since Windows 10, but Windows Night light is enough and what always struck me as odd is that Windows could schedule Night light but never the theme.
The PowerToys Light Switch feature can already schedule dark mode, with three modes, Sunset to Sunrise, Fixed hours, and Follow Night Light, plus a choice of applying dark mode to system UI, apps, or both. PowerToys is Microsoft’s own tool!
When Light Switch shipped, we mentioned that automatic theme switching being already been one of the most requested Windows features, may come native to Windows.
There’s also an open-source Auto Dark Mode utility that adds conditions like pausing switches during gaming. Microsoft is basically bringing something power users have installed.
Microsoft is finishing up Windows 11’s dark mode overhaul
Interestingly, this scheduling feature is showing up amid a bigger dark-mode cleanup. It’s a running joke that Windows 11’s dark mode still has older Win32 dialogs that blind us with bright white UI when we accidentally invoke those dialogs at night.
Windows Latest reported Microsoft’s first push to fix legacy file-operation dialogs in 2025, covering copy, move, and delete dialogs, though it briefly caused a white-flash bug before Microsoft fixed it.
Since then, Microsoft has confirmed a larger dark-mode overhaul instead of painting old dialogs dark. The Windows 95-era Properties dialog is being rebuilt in native WinUI 3 with dark mode support, part of a push to bring more of Windows’ UI to WinUI 3 instead of patching legacy code piece by piece. We reported it with screenshots of the new Print Management tool too.
AutoPlay is next in line, with dark mode built-in. Auto Dark Mode is arriving while Windows finally gets more consistent with the mode.
Did Microsoft take their sweet time to do this? They very much did. macOS already has this natively, including waiting for the Mac to go idle before switching.
But I’m still looking forward to seeing more such quality improvements in Windows 11.
