A new report published yesterday revealed that Microsoft is all set to change the internal codenames of Windows 10 updates. The most recent Windows 10 October 2018 Update is codenamed Redstone 5 and the Spring 2019 Update is internally referred to as “19H1”.

This is going to change as the American tech giant is planning a new approach for the post-19H1 Windows 10 release schedule.

The codenames are used by all tech giants to give names to projects whose marketing name has not yet been decided. The codenames have a meaning. For example, in the case of Windows 10 19H1 which is the codename of the next update, the “19H1” is the direct reference to its release. 19 represents the year 2019 and H1 refers to the first half of the year. That means the update would go live in the first half of 2019.

The update after 19H1 won’t be called 19H2 as the company is going for a new codename scheme. According to the rumour, Windows 10 Fall 2019 update would be codenamed Vanadium and the update set to arrive in 2020 could be called Vibranium.

To summerise:

  • Redstone 5 is Windows 10 October 2018 Update.
  • Windows 10 19H1 is supposed to arrive in April 2019.
  • Windows 10 Vanadium is the fall 2019 update with the release date set for October 2019.
  • Windows 10 Vibranium will arrive in early 2020.

It’s important to note that the marketing/public name of Windows 10 19H1, Vanadium and Vibranium is not known yet.

Elements from the Periodic Table

Interestingly, the codename “Vanadium” is an element that we usually see in the Periodic Table. But Vibranium is the material used for making Captain America’s shield.

The first two releases of Windows 10 were codenamed Threshold and Microsoft switched to Redstone for total five difference Windows 10 releases. The new codenames are unique but this isn’t a new thing for Microsoft as the company has previously allotted codenames like “Caprock” to Surface devices and the Microsoft’s Azure update is codenamed Titanium (another element).
