The experience with Microsoft Surface has been mostly positive as Microsoft has refined and improved the product line in the past few years. For the first time in the United States, Microsoft breaks into the top five PC makers, according to the latest Gartner report.

Microsoft’s hardware initiative began under Steve Balmer and the Surface lineup is now popular in the PC market. A new data published by analyst firm Gartner shows Microsoft’s efforts are paying off as the Surface lineup has helped Microsoft grow its presence in the PC market.

Microsoft now holds the fifth position in terms of US sales, just after Apple. “The PC market continued to be driven by steady corporate PC demand, which was driven by Windows 10 PC hardware upgrades. We expect the Windows 10 upgrade cycle to continue through 2020 at which point the upgrade demand will diminish,” explains Mikako Kitagawa, principal analyst at Gartner.

The report also revealed that global PC shipments increased by just 0.1 percent and the growth is likely to continue as more and more users are adopting Windows 10 devices. In the third quarter of 2018, the shipment was of 67.2 million units and the demand remains steady.

“Despite the third quarter typically showing strong consumer PC sales due to the back-to-school season, weakness in consumer PC demand continued, offsetting the strong sales in the business market.”
