Microsoft released yet another new app for Android. You cannot use Google Maps or Bing Maps for indoor navigation. Microsoft’s new app Path Guide is the solution to indoor navigation problem. The GPS doesn’t work when you try to use inside a house and Path Guide is the solution you have been looking for.

Microsoft’s Path Guide is an indoor navigation app for Android. Microsoft announced the new app for Android on its Research Blog. Microsoft claims Path Guide to be completely map-free and infrastructure-free app.

The company calls it a plug-and-play indoor navigation service. Here are some key features of Path Guide.

  • User records sensory data with his/her device during a given indoor walk. The location-specific geomagnetic features extracted from the sensory data are combined with the user’s walking patterns (e.g., steps, turns, going upstairs/downstairs) to build a reference trace.
  • Reference trace is pushed to the cloud and can be searched by others for navigation. O
  • Once downloaded a reference trace, Path Guide compares and synchronizes current sensor readings with the reference trace, and guides the user, in real time, from the same starting location to the final destination
