When Microsoft launched Surface Laptop, the company also introduced Windows 10 S. It is a new operating system from Microsoft that is optimized for speed and performance. The Redmond-based Microsoft has blocked the ability to install Win32 apps, the OS is locked to Windows Store apps while everything else is same just like Windows 10 Pro.

Windows 10 is streamlined for security and superior performance. It comes with Windows Store ensuring Microsoft-verified security and integrity. The default browser is Microsoft Edge, you also cannot use Chrome or Firefox. Alternatively, you can download any browser from the Windows Store and install it on your Surface Laptop.

If you’ve recently bought Surface Laptop, you can upgrade to Windows 10 Pro until the end of the year for free. Otherwise, you will need to pay $49 and upgrade to Windows 10 Pro.

Microsoft has now confirmed that they are extending the free upgrade offer until March 31, 2018. It seems Microsoft has finally realised that Windows 10 S is not ready just yet. You have got plenty of time to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro. Remember, you can always rollback to Windows 10 S from Pro, and your laptop will still be licensed for Pro.
