KB5065790

Windows 11 KB5065790 for version 23H2 is rolling out today with several fixes and a warning about its imminent end of service. Version 23H2 is almost a year old, and Microsoft will abandon this version after November 11, 2025.

With barely two months away from the retirement date, this update lacks any kind of new feature add-on.

Last month’s optional update added the Windows Backup for Organizations for Education and Enterprise users, but there’s no surprise this month. Since Windows 11 KB5065790 is an optional update for 23H2, you must manually install it from the settings app.

There’s also an alternative method using the offline installer file (.msu) that you can use if the Settings app cannot find or install the update. Before discussing the fixes introduced with the KB5065790 update, let’s have a look at the download links.

Double-click on the installer file after the download completes and patiently wait for it to apply the update.

What’s new in Windows 11 Build 22621.5984?

As I mentioned above, you only get bug fixes for numerous problems that shipped with the previous updates. Users with a SIM-type authentication couldn’t log in when they tried using a mobile connection. The login screen froze, halting the login process, but this problem has been resolved.

Another major issue was with Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) sessions. As you already know, Microsoft plans to retire RDP soon, but this issue was affecting users with a multi-monitor setup. If you disconnected any monitor during an RDF session, it would abruptly force shutdown the system.

Windows 11 24H2 gets out of band emergency patch for Office issues

Microsoft has also pushed an Out-of-band (OOB) update alongside this optional update for Windows 11 24H2 PCs. The update targets urgent patching of issues and excludes the SMB protocol for file sharing problems.

It doesn’t mention anything about the DRM issues that affects September Patc Tuesday release. We found the DRM problem with a certain player last week, but the official health page still mentions a “confirmed” label next to the problem.

The OOB update for Windows 11 24H2 also solves a problem related to Microsoft Office apps running in Microsoft Application Virtualization (App-V) environments.

Here are a few more bugs that you don’t need to worry about anymore:

  • Microsoft Edge stopped working in Internet Explorer compatibility mode due to implementing same-domain redirects.
  • If you tried to check the printer queue in Settings on a shared printer, the UI crashed and failed to load.

These were the issues that plagued the 23H2 PCs. Microsoft fixed the SMB file sharing for 23H2, but the OOB update for 24H2 didn’t address the issue.
