Developer says Windows 10 ARM on Lumia 950 XL is possible

Windows 10 on ARM project has already got us pretty excited with the promises of multi-day battery life, Win32 apps emulation support and impressive performance. Recently the developers have shown WinPE with Windows 10 operating system running on a Lumia 950 smartphones, but the Windows 10 ARM on Windows Phone continues to be part of a dream that’s yet to come true, but there’s now hope once again that such a project could happen.

Windows 10 on ARM project brings Windows 10 to laptops and 2-in-1 running on an ARM processor. Basically, Windows 10 on ARM brings mobility to the laptops as it has a power-efficient design, impressive battery life and always connected data connection.

Microsoft’s Lumia 950 XL is an ARM-equipped smartphone, but the company has no plan to port the new version of operating system to Windows Phone due to a number of limitation that will require too much of time. The idea to run a full version of Windows 10 with the desktop on Lumia sounds impressive, though it’s not practical. As the Lumia has a super-sensitive display it wouldn’t be too difficult to use, either.

Developer Ben in a tweet has confirmed that it’s possible to hack Microsoft Lumia 950 XL and run Windows 10 ARM on it, but it’s difficult. “Bootstrapping a normal Windows 10 ARM (not PE) means bootstrapping own AArch64 firmware and drivers, which will be hell difficult,” he explains.

If any developer ever releases Windows 10 ARM for Lumia 950, it would be interesting to see how well the handset handles the operating system, but it could provide a new lease of life for some smartphones.

Microsoft is working a mobile-type device that will be powered by a Windows 10 ARM operating system, and if Microsoft ever actually releases the long-rumoured Andromeda, it will offer both mobile and desktop experience.
